Briefing on Economic Operation of China’s Garment Industry from January to July 2022

From January to July, with the strong support of the continuous recovery of international market demand, China’s clothing exports continued to grow rapidly on the basis of a high base in 2021, showing a strong development resilience. However, the global inflation remains high, the risk of weakening international market demand increases, and the multiple outbreaks of domestic epidemics are detrimental to the normal production and operation of enterprises. China’s clothing exports will face greater pressure in the next stage. According to Chinese customs data, from January to July, China’s exports of clothing and clothing accessories totaled US $99.558 billion, up 12.9% year on year, 0.9 percentage points faster than that from January to June; In July, the export of clothing and clothing accessories was 19.638 billion US dollars, up 18.5% year on year.

The export volume and price of knitted clothing rose together, and the export unit price of woven clothing increased significantly. According to the data of China Customs, from January to July, the number of clothing exports was 18.49 billion, with a year-on-year growth of 5.0%. The average export unit price was 4.45 US dollars, with a year-on-year growth of 14.6%. Among them, the export quantity and export unit price of knitted clothing increased by 10.2% year on year; Due to the rapid growth of the export of clothing with high added value of outdoor commuting and driven by the rise in the price of raw materials, the export volume of woven clothing fell in price, the export volume fell 4.9% year on year, and the export unit price increased 25.2% year on year. In the same period, China’s exports of plastic and vulcanized rubber gloves fell 67.3% year on year, and chemical fiber protective clothing fell 57.0% year on year.

China’s clothing exports to major markets showed strong growth, while the decline in exports to Japan continued to narrow. According to Chinese customs data, from January to July, China’s clothing exports to the United States, the European Union and ASEAN totaled US $23.99 billion, US $20.65 billion and US $8.54 billion, up 15.7%, 21.8% and 29.3% year on year, respectively, 1.19, 2.28 and 1.84 percentage points faster than those from January to June; China’s clothing exports to Japan reached 7.68 billion US dollars, down 1.3% year on year, 3.89 percentage points less than that from January to June. The above four countries and regions accounted for 61.1% of China’s total clothing exports, driving the growth of China’s clothing exports by 10.0 percentage points. Over the same period, China’s clothing exports to countries and regions along the the Belt and Road, Latin America and Oceania continued to maintain rapid growth, with growth rates of 13.8%, 35.8% and 18.0%, respectively, driving China’s clothing exports up by 3.3, 1.6 and 0.6 percentage points. In addition, China’s clothing exports to Canada and Russia decreased by 7.2% and 29.1% year on year respectively, and its clothing exports to Africa decreased by 6.2% year on year.
